How to Make Money Selling on eBay

Make Money Selling on eBaySelling on eBay can be a great way to make money as a full time income or a side hustle.  As you know from our recent series of posts there are a variety of ways for women to make money online.   This is just one of them and in case you’re wondering if it’s true, yes women can make money selling on eBay.

So often we only see the final product of people who run successful online business and think it must be easy.  Well that’s not exactly true.  Like most jobs, it’s not easy to make money online and it takes time to set the foundation, but once you do it and put in the work the rewards will be worth it.

If you want to start building your online empire and have goods to sell you may want to make money selling on eBay.  This selling site is different from others such as Amazon because it’s people selling their own goods online whereas Amazon has a variety of selling models including both brands and individual vendors.  As an example I always buy Diet Lemon Snapple for my Keurig on Amazon from Snapple.  On eBay I would have to buy it from a person who has the K-Cups for sale.

If you’re thinking of signing up for eBay here are the steps to get set up and make money selling on eBay:

Sell something people want

eBay is a great resource for people to buy things online that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.  I live in Canada and trust me when I say we don’t get a lot of the amazing and new products that our neighbors in the United States have at their convenience.

If you’re selling something people want then they will buy it.  I’ve bought so many food products on eBay such as flavors of Trident gum that I saw on TV which hasn’t come to Canada yet as well as Kellogg’s Coco Krispies, you know the chocolate version of Rice Krispies with the monkey instead of Snap, Crackle and Pop.  I love that cereal and buy it every time I’m in the U.S.  In between trips I buy it on eBay.

The risk is that you are buying from a person, not a well known name brand.  You take the chance that the item is in good condition, new in the box and unused as well as safe.  I’m lucky that I’ve never had a problem with any products and that’s a good thing.  I don’t think the seller would want to risk their reputation – especially if this is how they make a living.

Service is key for ratings

Your reputation is key when selling products online – and in real life too.  You don’t want to sell products that aren’t as described, not properly pack them so they arrive damaged or lack communication with your buyer.  These are all things that buyers will evaluate when they rate you after the sale, so make sure you act professionally and honestly.

Your star rating on eBay can be the deciding factor when a new client is choosing to buy your products over the next seller.  The more ratings you have the better it is for your business and therefore the more cash you’ll make.

Always add pictures and a description

They say you never get a second chance to make a first impression.  This is especially true when selling goods online.  As a seller you need to grab the attention of buyers while they are scrolling through hundreds of the same products.  Ask yourself what would make someone want to buy your product over the next person?

Price is of course one aspect, but information is the main reason.  Make a good first impression by adding a bright photo (with a light background) as well as a thorough description.  Include things like exact measurements for size if you’re selling clothes, expiration date if you’re selling food and manufacture details if you’re selling accessories or electronics.

Ramit from I Will Teach You To Be Rich says both the quality and quantity of photos are important if you want to make money selling on eBay.  “Use really good pictures – not blurry and not old-looking. They don’t have to be perfect, but should show NOT ONLY the item BUT ALSO that the item lives in a nice environment.  Use lots of pictures. If you’re buying something from an unknown eBay seller, your confidence goes up with the number of real photos of the item in question. One reader told us her secret was “LOTS of pictures.”
