Blog Roundup: Government Shutdown Edition

In case you haven’t heard, the United States Federal Government may or may not shut down by the time this is posted.

The shutdown will affect millions; and not just the 800,000 workers, but those federal contractors that will also be furloughed, families of federal employees, and any other person that relies on the government … which basically mean everyone!

Everyone has their own opinions on the situation and they’re entitled to those opinions.  I’m not sure what to think of the shutdown – sometimes I’m mad, other times I’m indifferent, other times I laugh.  It’s really a crazy situation that I just don’t even know how to process.  I’ve been watching national news stations and refreshing their Websites constantly – it’s exhausting!

The next few days, weeks, and months, should prove to be very interesting …

But on to better news:  only 3 link this week, but they’re good ones!

The Old Green Chair

“Looking back on it, we didn’t get rid of that old green chair because we wanted to. We both loved that old thing. We both ceremoniously sat in that chair for a while on our last day in that old apartment before leaving it at the curb. Between the two of us, we didn’t really mind the appearance of that chair, and neither did our friends.  Instead, we got rid of it out of a sense of what we were supposed to do.”  – by Trent at The Simple Dollar

(Amber’s Note:  G and I have 2 chairs like this.  They’re big, comfortable, cushy, tan rocking chairs.  My mom rocked my siblings and I in these chairs, they make the most perfect squeaking noise when you rock in them, and I absolutely ADORE them.  G wants to trash them when we move, but I don’t think I can part with them … and after reading that, I know I won’t.)

The Healthy Tipping Point Book

“The Healthy Tipping Point Book will include fitness tips, cooking tricks, and success stories from people just like YOU, as well as from professionals!  I’m not just looking for advice from people who’ve reached their goals, but also from people who are just starting off or fell off the wagon a few times.  Health is not linear.  If you have a story to tell or a tip to share, please submit your wisdom here.”by Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point

(Amber’s Note: Caitlin is writing her next book!  Please share your inspirational health stories with her!)

Thoughts on Work/Life Balance

“I think the key to achieving life/work sanity is making an effort to de-stress when you are really busy.  Over the last few months, I’ve made a real effort to streamline my professional/personal hats so I have more time to enjoy my life and/or sleep.” – by Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point

42 Goals in 42 Months

“I’m obsessed with self-improvement. For good or ill, all my life I’ve been on a constant quest to become a better person. (And yes, there are downsides to this.)"by J.D. at Get Rich Slowly

(Amber’s Note: I can relate.  I, too, am very obsessed with self-improvement.)

3 Months of Being the Boss and I’m Still Alive!

“I eat cereal a LOT of the meals a day, but not because of money – I work and work and work into all hours of the night and sometimes I just forget to eat! The other night I literally poured some Raisin Bran at 2 a.m. for dinner – no joke. I obviously still have some scheduling problems to work out ;) ”  – by J. Money at Budgets Are Sexy

Life After College – Happy Launch Day, Baby!

My house is in a state of disarray, you couldn’t pry me out of my sweats if you tried, stacks of unopened mail pile higher every day, and I have to add things like “shower” and “leave the house” to my to-do list. In Jenny Blake world this can only mean one thing…book launch day is upon us, baby!!!” by Jenny Blake at Life After College

Blog Roundup: Nice Weather & Financial Blogger Conference

I went for my first outdoor spring run yesterday!  It was everything I’ve ever wanted and more.  As soon as I set foot outside, I realized how absolutely awful treadmill running is.  Running outside is so much better – it’s more inspiring, the time flies by, the scenery is beautiful, the breeze is refreshing, and I always just feel more cleansed afterward.  After 4-5 months trapped indoors at a gym, I am ecstatic to get outside!

This weekend, with the nice weather, the Big 12 Championship in downtown Kansas City, and KU hopefully making it to the final game, mis amigos and I will be heading down to the Power & Light district to watch the game on the big outdoor screen (no tickets for us … so sad).  The outdoor area with the big screen (which used to be called “the living room” – do they still call it that?) is one of my favorite places to hang out on summer nights.  So much fun to enjoy the warm weather outdoors than inside (you have all winter to do that!).

**Is anyone planning on going to the Financial Blogger Conference over the October 1, 2011 weekend?  I found out about it yesterday (through Krystal’s blog post) and I would really like to go.  Chicago is just a short flight away from Kansas City, so it’s a quick trip for me.  I might need to some hotel roomies!  Let me know if you’re going!**

5 Reasons I’m Happy I Rent

Cheap rent. I realize this is not the case everywhere (just ask that “rent is too damn high” guy), but, here in Kansas City, rent is relatively cheap. My rent expense accounts for just 9% of my net income (living with someone helps, but when I lived alone, it accounted for about 21% of my net income). This allows me to save a substantial percentage of my income, putting me in a better position to (hopefully) throw down an awesome down payment when I do buy a home.”guest post by me on Consumerism Commentary

How to Save Money While Planning a Fabulous Wedding

“First and foremost, before you plan anything, set your priorities.  This is important because priorities are different for every person. Although ice sculptures and a string quartets are a MUST for some couples, unlimited kegs of beer and an awesome DJ are on the top of the list for others.” – by me on Money Under 30

File Under “I’ve Lost My Mind” – Student Loans Paid Off By 30

“It seems that most former students have decided that education loans are a necessary evil that must tolerated forever. It doesn’t have to be this way. A year ago, you could have categorized me with the group of post-grads that were content with paying the bare minimum and trudging along slowly, accumulating hundreds if not thousands of dollars in interest in the meantime. While I accept that interest is going to work against me no matter the rate at which I manage these payments, I want these loans gone.” – by Clare on Never Niche

It’s Your Job, but is it Your Passion?

“I always knew that my dream job wasn’t exactly going to be high paying; I just figured I’d find a way to make it work. But when the time came to make that decision, I started to second guess myself. Did I want to spend my life working long hours for a low salary? How important was buying a home of my own, and was retiring early really a goal I wanted to achieve? With the new job, I wouldn’t be able to do any of those things, no matter how much I cut out of my budget. So all of a sudden, The Perfect Job didn’t seem so perfect anymore. It was a hard decision to make, but I had to be realistic with myself.”by Krystal at Give Me Back My Five Bucks

Blog Roundup: Win a Free Pair of Whooga Boots Edition!

warmeruggs[1]

I’m a big fan of those trendy tall suede boots (or fuggs as Paranoid Asteroid would call them) that are oh-so-perfect for treking to work in the snow in, so when I received an e-mail about a company that sells the super-boot version of fuggs, I was pretty excited.

Whooga boots (to the left there) have a much thicker lining than most suede boots you see on the market these days.  All the better for keeping your toes warm!  (My fuggs are Target brand and as the winter rolls on, my feet are getting colder and wetter since my boots are starting to show wear and tear.)  Not only that, but they are shaped to contour perfectly to your feet, hand crafted, double-stitched for durability, and have a double-reinforced heel for support.

Sounds a lot better than the fuggs I rock from Target!

Although the company is a non-US company, ANYONE can sign up for their HERE newsletter to be entered in a drawing to win a FREE pair of boots!  On a monthly basis!

And if you don’t win that free pair, use this discount code – 1477BALANCE – to received 10% off your order.

Let me know if you try them out!  I might have to purchase a pair for next winter (that will hopefully last several winters past that!).
