Homeowners

In two weeks, I will officially be a homeowner.

Hooray!

We ended up making an offer on House #1 – on Super Bowl Sunday actually.  After a week of negotiations, the seller’s finally agreed to our final offer which just happened to be $23,000 below their original listing price!

They also agreed to pay $2,000 in closing costs, which is the reason why the entire process took a week to nail down.  Both sides had agreed on the sale price, but we wanted $2,000 in closing and they didn’t want to agree to that.  Finally, after our real estate agent informed them that we were starting to look at other houses, they caved.

Our closing date is coming fast, too.  Just two weeks away.  That was one of the reasons the sellers negotiated with us – we don’t have a house to sell so we could close ASAP.  The time from our contract to our closing date is less than 30 days!  It worked our perfectly because our first mortgage payment will be due in May and our last rent payment is due in April, so we don’t have to pay double at all, which is something I had kind of expected that we’d have to do.

I feel like we got a great deal.  The house is new and updated and is a “blank slate”.  Truly.  Every single wall in the house is that stock tan/beige color.  All the fixtures are updated, the appliance are all updated (well, the fridge will be once we go out and buy one since the house doesn’t come with one).  The range is even one of those separate drop-in ranges which is something I really wanted.  So cool!  And it’s flat (not sure of the technical term) so no more food-nasties stuck under the burners!  I’m a messy cook, so this is perfect for me.

The deck is stained in a beautiful dark color and has a brand-new pergola with a built-in ceiling fan!  So fancy.  The house sits on a 3rd of an acre and has a new fence and a lot of fancy landscaping that I have no idea what to do with.  I guess I’ll be learning!  The new fence is key because that means we can finally add a new member to our family ASAP – a big dog!  Can’t wait!

The kitchen has the big flat island that I really wanted and has something like 35 cabinets, which is quite a step up from the 8 or so in our apartment.  It’s all open concept so the kitchen flows through the eating area to the living room.

It has a 3-car garage and an unfinished basement.  The cracks in the basement floor are nothing to worry about, says our inspector.  He kept saying, “They used to have dirt floors for basements.  The only thing this basement floor does is serve as a place to put a floor if you finish it.  These cracks are normal.”  If water was coming through the floor or if was hugely buckling or shifting, that would be a problem, but it’s not.  We’ll finish the basement over time (my husband says it will be his man cave and when I ask where my girl cave will be, he claims it is the whole house), but we’re in no rush.

The master suite is sweet.  ;)   See what I did there?  Huge closet, fancy shower that’s like it’s own separate fully-tiled room with two, yes TWO, showerheads.  Double vanities, sitting room, huge windows.  All good things.

Quite a change from our cramped little apartment that we’ve been enjoying for the past 3 years while we threw every spare penny we had towards our savings.  I can’t believe that after so many years of renting, I will own a house AND a good chunk of land.

We are so excited!

I feel like this is a huge change in our life.  And because of that, I think it’s the perfect time to sign off from Blonde & Balanced.

Blonde & Balanced isn’t going away.  I’ll still be accepting and posting guest posts.  Other writers will talk about striking a balance in life, health, and money.  All will be the same, I just won’t be the face of the site anymore.

I want to focus my attention on some other projects I’ve been brewing.  People still want to see personal finance related articles here and I’m just not a personal finance blogger anymore.  Of course, I’ll continue with my freelance writing about personal finance.  I’ll still be around on twitter.  You can always e-mail me directly at amber dot gilstrap1 at gmail dot com and I hope you do so we can stay connected!

Thanks for being such awesome readers!

Blog Roundup: Nice Weather & Financial Blogger Conference

I went for my first outdoor spring run yesterday!  It was everything I’ve ever wanted and more.  As soon as I set foot outside, I realized how absolutely awful treadmill running is.  Running outside is so much better – it’s more inspiring, the time flies by, the scenery is beautiful, the breeze is refreshing, and I always just feel more cleansed afterward.  After 4-5 months trapped indoors at a gym, I am ecstatic to get outside!

This weekend, with the nice weather, the Big 12 Championship in downtown Kansas City, and KU hopefully making it to the final game, mis amigos and I will be heading down to the Power & Light district to watch the game on the big outdoor screen (no tickets for us … so sad).  The outdoor area with the big screen (which used to be called “the living room” – do they still call it that?) is one of my favorite places to hang out on summer nights.  So much fun to enjoy the warm weather outdoors than inside (you have all winter to do that!).

**Is anyone planning on going to the Financial Blogger Conference over the October 1, 2011 weekend?  I found out about it yesterday (through Krystal’s blog post) and I would really like to go.  Chicago is just a short flight away from Kansas City, so it’s a quick trip for me.  I might need to some hotel roomies!  Let me know if you’re going!**

On to the links!  (Including some guest posts by me…)

5 Reasons I’m Happy I Rent

Cheap rent. I realize this is not the case everywhere (just ask that “rent is too damn high” guy), but, here in Kansas City, rent is relatively cheap. My rent expense accounts for just 9% of my net income (living with someone helps, but when I lived alone, it accounted for about 21% of my net income). This allows me to save a substantial percentage of my income, putting me in a better position to (hopefully) throw down an awesome down payment when I do buy a home.”guest post by me on Consumerism Commentary

How to Save Money While Planning a Fabulous Wedding

“First and foremost, before you plan anything, set your priorities.  This is important because priorities are different for every person. Although ice sculptures and a string quartets are a MUST for some couples, unlimited kegs of beer and an awesome DJ are on the top of the list for others.” – by me on Money Under 30

File Under “I’ve Lost My Mind” – Student Loans Paid Off By 30

“It seems that most former students have decided that education loans are a necessary evil that must tolerated forever. It doesn’t have to be this way. A year ago, you could have categorized me with the group of post-grads that were content with paying the bare minimum and trudging along slowly, accumulating hundreds if not thousands of dollars in interest in the meantime. While I accept that interest is going to work against me no matter the rate at which I manage these payments, I want these loans gone.” – by Clare on Never Niche

It’s Your Job, but is it Your Passion?

“I always knew that my dream job wasn’t exactly going to be high paying; I just figured I’d find a way to make it work. But when the time came to make that decision, I started to second guess myself. Did I want to spend my life working long hours for a low salary? How important was buying a home of my own, and was retiring early really a goal I wanted to achieve? With the new job, I wouldn’t be able to do any of those things, no matter how much I cut out of my budget. So all of a sudden, The Perfect Job didn’t seem so perfect anymore. It was a hard decision to make, but I had to be realistic with myself.”by Krystal at Give Me Back My Five Bucks

Have a great weekend!

One Balanced Blog Roundup: Exciting News Edition

Last weekend, I didn’t have time to get to a roundup, so this weekend, I’m giving out double the links! Perfect for your weekend relaxation!

On to some exciting news!

  • I’m going to be doing some writing for the Lending Tree blog.  I’m currently pondering the similarities between staying financially and physically fit.  Wow, there are so many similarities between the two!  When my post is up, I’ll be sure to let you all know so you can head over and let me know your thoughts!
  • In other news: I BOUGHT A WEDDING DRESS!  I am so stoked because 1) it was the PERFECT dress, like, really, PERFECT, and 2) it came in under budget!  I guess you can find a dress that looks like it costs $5,000 for under $1,000 (as Money Maus wisely tweeted the other day…).  I’m drafting a wedding dress post right now and it’ll be up shortly…
  • That’s really all of my exciting news, but I’m so pumped about both things that I deemed them worthy of their own post… :)

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Blonde & Balanced!

The time has finally come – my new blog is open and ready for business!

(Pssst…This is Carrie from Carrie…On The Cheap in case you’re reading this in a feedreader and are completely confused.)

Welcome to my new blog – Blonde & Balanced!

My real name is Amber, so you can forget all about that pen name of Carrie that I used to go by (which is a little bittersweet, I had some good memories with that name).

I’m so so excited for the new blog! It had been many months in the making and I think it turned out really great! If you’re still in the feedreader, feel free to come over to the site, check it out, and stay awhile!  Take time to check out my About page as well – it’s got a lot of good info about the site.

You’re probably wondering what exactly this new site is all about and that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

First of all, my last blog was an anonymous personal finance blog.  The new blog will still focus on personal finance, but it will also focus on some other topics that I’ll get to in a second.

My new blog isn’t anonymous, but it’s not 100% public either.  I’m slowly starting to tell some people in my life about my blog, but I’m not telling everyone.  Also, if someone that I know in real life were to happen across my blog, I wouldn’t mind telling them about it.  I guess you could say, I’m easing myself slowly into the world of non-anoymity.  It’s kinda scary after being anonymous for a year and a half!

Okay, let’s get to the good stuff - what this blog is about:

Why Blonde & Balanced?

Blonde & Balanced is a blog about striking a balance in life, health, and money.

I went with blonde because, well, I’m blonde!  (Nothing against any brunettes or redheads, it’s just a description of me really.)  I love being blonde and love that it represents being girly and fun.  I am all those things.  But, I’m also  a lot more…

Each letter in the word “blonde” represents one of the key topics that I’ll write about on the blog:

B is for Body: I love to (or try to) lead a healthy, yet balanced, lifestyle .  This doesn’t mean cutting out every bad food from my diet, rather,  it means finding a balance between the good and the bad so I don’t drive myself crazy.  I love discovering new “superfoods”, trying out new exercises, and just being generally active.  My heart lies with weightlifting and I once even coined it my workout soul mate.  A little weird, I know.

L is for Life: Here is my catchall group for all things in my world.  Whether it’s stories about my upcoming wedding, social outings with my friends, or vacation planning with my fiancé – you’ll find it here.

O is for Opinion:  I have an opinion.  Maybe too many.  I don’t judge, I just form opinions.  Everyone has their own opinions and I love to hear other people’s side as well.  We all hail from different walks of life, so our thoughts should differ from time to time, am I right?  You’ll find opinion posts on the site from time to time.

N is for Notes:  I thought the word “musings” was too played out.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t muse from time to time.  Instead, I’ll disguise my musings under the word Notes and trick you guys into reading my random ramblings.  Brilliant idea, if I do say so myself.

D is for Dollars: Easy.  You guys know I love me some money talk.  I live, breathe, and die savings, income, and debt topics.  Of course, my original blog was solely focused on personal finance, so a good portion of the talk on this blog will be personal finance as well.  Never fear PF readers, I’ll still talk dollars!

E is for Excel: An idle mind is never a good thing.  I’m constantly trying to improve myself.  No one has ever reached their full potential.  I’m always trying to reach mine (er, it’s still a ways off).  Whether it’s as small as figuring out a way to donate some time to my church or as big as passing the CPA exam, I’ll always work to excel at something.

Balanced: And among all of those little pools of life … I try to find balance.  Because balance is the key to everything.

There you have it!  I’m so excited about the new blog and can’t wait to talk about all the new topics!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll talk more about my manifestos on all the core B&B topics.

Stay tuned and thanks for reading!

Housekeeping!

Happy Friday everyone!  The summer weekends are dwindling down and I don’t even want to talk about that.  It just means winter is that much closer and I. can’t. stand. winter.

Moving on to happier topics!

New Website

The new Website is almost ready to go.  I’ve got to clean up some various pages and that’s about it.  Once that’s complete, I’m going to make the switch to redirect my wordpress blog to my new site!

The plan is to make the switch THIS WEEKEND.

So, come Monday morning (or even this weekend if you’re hanging around the blog) my current blog (Carrie…On The Cheap) should redirect to my NEW BLOG (www.secretname.com).

If you come over Monday morning and don’t get a redirect, it’s probably because of one of two things:

  1. Something didn’t go as planned and I didn’t get to it this weekend OR
  2. I made an epic error and there is a problem with the redirect

Let’s hope things go smoothly, though, and you’ll be welcomed with open arms to my new site on Monday!

Wedding Confessions

I’m so glad you guys liked the teaser for my new Wedding Confessions series that I put up this week!  This series will NOT be on my new site.  I’m partnering with a wedding Website for this series and I’ll be sure to post the link as soon as everything is ready to go.  I think you guys will really like the series!

Netbook

I’ve had my netbook for a little over 2 weeks now and I’m absolutely loving it.  It is so convenient – even in it’s hot pink carrying case, it fits nicely into my purse.

P8190577

I’ve been bringing it with me to work and anywhere else I know I’ll have time to kill.  It has turned out to be very useful over lunch at work – I’ve been snagging open conference rooms during my lunch hour and getting lots of blog tasks and freelance writing done.  So far, the netbook is a win!

Keep On Keepin’ On

That’s about it for me!  I hope you guys have a great weekend and I’ll see you bright and early Monday morning with my new blog introduction post!
