Hiring a Blog Designer & 7 Things About Me

First things first, I’m looking for a professional blog designer.  I have a couple in mind, but wanted to ask my lovely readers for their input first.

Let’s just get this out in the open:  my techie skills are limited to the on/off button and CTRL+ALT+DELETE combination troubleshooting trick.  I fumbled my way through this blog design that you see here and although it will suffice, as Sustainable Life Blog once put it on twitter, “it looks like a kindergartener’s work.”  (He was referring to himself and I have to disagree, but will gladly steal the description for my own work.)

My favorite designs?  Here, here, here, and here.  Oh, and here.  And here.

I want a design that works.  A package design, if you will.  The designer doesn’t have to have a web design degree or anything.  But I want a button for people to “grab I want a button for people to “grab” and add to their blogs (or that I can swap with other bloggers!).  I want buttons in my sidebar that go with my theme.  I can write the content, but I am just no good at the design.

Do you know of any blog designers out there?  If you suggest yourself, please don’t be offended if I don’t hire you … like I said, I have a couple in mind already, just wanted to put this out into the universe in case my perfect blog-designer match was waiting.

Mi amiga, Crystal, over at Twenty Eight and a Half (whose writing I first encountered – and became hooked on – over at Brunette on a Budget) tagged me with The Versatile Blogger award.

And since today was all-around shit-tastic, this award put a little skip in my step that I very much needed.  Thanks, Crystal!

So, here are 7 things!

  • I studied abroad in Spain one summer during college.  I went to school, lived with a Spanish family, lived in a big city (Valencia, Spain, to be exact), the whole bit.  In my 27 1/2 years of living, it was in the top 3 experiences of my life.  It is quite surreal to be in Kansas City one day, living your normal, simple Midwest life and on the other side of the world the very next day, standing in the middle of a Spanish plaza with thousands of people bustling around you, on the pay phone, shouting at your parents that you landed safely in Madrid; and then to get into a car with a Spanish woman and drive to her downtown apartment, meet your new “brother”, eat a fresh Mediterranean-style dinner, and go to bed in their house so you can get up early for your first day of Spanish school the next day – it was quite a whirlwind!  While I was there, I was able to see much of Spain, including one (wild) weekend in Ibiza.  No words can sum up how grateful I am for that experience.
  • Living alone for 3 years post-college was one of my better decisions.  Now that I’m about to be married, and a family will follow that, I know that I’ll never live alone ever again.  And while I’m happy about that, I think it’s good for one’s independence and growth to be, literally, on their own for at least some time in their life.
  • I got glasses in the 2nd grade.  How embarrassing.  With my shoulder-length bright blonde hair, blunt bangs, and big plastic glasses, my 3rd-grade teacher often referred to me as “Garth”.  You scarred me for LIFE, Mr. Packard!
  • I am super un-jealous.  Girls do not make me jealous at all.  I am not catty and like to be friends with girls.  However, you can smell a jealous, insecure girl from a mile away because they tear down other girl’s looks and actions constantly.  Focus on yourself, girlies!
  • I lose interest in things quickly.  Two exceptions are:  my fiancé and blogging.  I have lost interest somewhat quickly in every guy I ever dated except for G.  Scarily enough, my interest in him continues to grow each day.  Sometimes it drives me crazy!  The other is blogging.  Although my interest in the actual act of blogging ebbs and flows (most due to lack of time or things to write about), if I’m not writing, I am stalking your blogs like crazy!  I am a tad obsessed with blogs (even if I’m not commenting, I am totes reading).  A third thing that might be added to the list is health/fitness … but I even lose interest in working out sometimes … which is why I am always having to change things up.
  • I hid 6 bottles of Mike’s Hard Lemonade in my room as a teenager for months.  My friends finally had a party one night and I took the (stale) drinks to the party.  The next day, my mom asked me where the bottles were.  Apparently, she had been keeping an eye on them the entire time I thought they were “hidden”.  Epic teenager fail.  Another parental win.
  • My favorite drinks are: Boulevard Zon (although, New Belgium Mothership Wit is making headway), Mainstreet Cabernet Sauvignon (oh, who am I kidding?  It’s really Yellow Tail Cab.), Captain Morgan & (Caffeine-Free) Diet Coke with a lime … and lots and lots of water.  I love water.  ;)

To pass on the award, you’re supposed to nominate 7 versatile bloggers.  Well, I never liked leaving anyone out, so I nominate all the young, female personal finance bloggers!  You know who you are … I just awarded you. :)

Let’s Talk About Assertiveness

I can be assertive.  I love assertive people.  I think it gets things done and points people on the right track.  As an assertive person, I seriously dislike these things:

  • Being passive-aggressive.  (No, no, no!  Especially on Facebook.  Passive-aggressive Facebook status updates are THE. WORST.)
  • Being timid in your requests, beliefs, questions. (Ask for what you want.  It’s. That. Simple.  Don’t beat around the bush and sheepishly toss out an idea if you know exactly what you want.)
  • Political correctness.  (It’s just a bottleneck for saying what you really want to say.  Much to my chagrin, it’s a game you have to play these days, so I play along.)

I wasn’t always very assertive, but I grew into it with age.  I think my assertiveness really started to break-free when I became more comfortable a work.  After seeing one too many passive aggressive meetings go nowhere, I realized that being assertive is not a bad thing.

Assertiveness definitely has its perks, most recently during my wedding planning shenanigans.  But I also have a lot of success from being assertive at work, as a consumer, and just in life where I have to tell it like it is and get something done.

I’m not one of those constantly assertive people though.  I’ve learned when to turn it on and turn it off.  I do have a sensitive side.  Some of my closest friends might not even really know about my assertiveness because I don’t really need to be assertive when I’m hanging out with mis amigas.  I only dial up the assertiveness when necessary – and I think that’s the best way to play up your assertiveness.

Not surprisingly, G is almost the exact opposite. (Opposites attract?)  While I’m more concerned with getting sh*t done, he’s usually more concerned with people’s feelings.  Neither of us is right or wrong, we just deal with situations differently.  Sometimes this drives me crazy, but G is well-known for being well-liked because he is always concerned with other’s feelings.

But that’s another misconception of assertiveness: Assertive does not equal mean.  I may ask for what I want, but I am (usually) always polite about it.  I smile, I throw in a friendly laugh to make someone a little more comfortable (that is, until I lash out in a fit of rage if they don’t give me what I want … ha ha. I kid, I kid.).  I am not a mean person, I’m just a person who knows what I want and am not afraid to ask for it.

Being assertive has benefitted me in so many ways over the years – in my finances, my career, my life, and my wedding planning.  While it may have taken some growing into, I’ve learned to love it.

Are you assertive or passive? Do you and your significant other act similarly or differently?

Welcome to Blonde & Balanced!

The time has finally come – my new blog is open and ready for business!

(Pssst…This is Carrie from Carrie…On The Cheap in case you’re reading this in a feedreader and are completely confused.)

Welcome to my new blog – Blonde & Balanced!

My real name is Amber, so you can forget all about that pen name of Carrie that I used to go by (which is a little bittersweet, I had some good memories with that name).

I’m so so excited for the new blog! It had been many months in the making and I think it turned out really great! If you’re still in the feedreader, feel free to come over to the site, check it out, and stay awhile!  Take time to check out my About page as well – it’s got a lot of good info about the site.

You’re probably wondering what exactly this new site is all about and that’s what we’re going to talk about today.

First of all, my last blog was an anonymous personal finance blog.  The new blog will still focus on personal finance, but it will also focus on some other topics that I’ll get to in a second.

My new blog isn’t anonymous, but it’s not 100% public either.  I’m slowly starting to tell some people in my life about my blog, but I’m not telling everyone.  Also, if someone that I know in real life were to happen across my blog, I wouldn’t mind telling them about it.  I guess you could say, I’m easing myself slowly into the world of non-anoymity.  It’s kinda scary after being anonymous for a year and a half!

Okay, let’s get to the good stuff - what this blog is about:

Why Blonde & Balanced?

Blonde & Balanced is a blog about striking a balance in life, health, and money.

I went with blonde because, well, I’m blonde!  (Nothing against any brunettes or redheads, it’s just a description of me really.)  I love being blonde and love that it represents being girly and fun.  I am all those things.  But, I’m also  a lot more…

Each letter in the word “blonde” represents one of the key topics that I’ll write about on the blog:

B is for Body: I love to (or try to) lead a healthy, yet balanced, lifestyle .  This doesn’t mean cutting out every bad food from my diet, rather,  it means finding a balance between the good and the bad so I don’t drive myself crazy.  I love discovering new “superfoods”, trying out new exercises, and just being generally active.  My heart lies with weightlifting and I once even coined it my workout soul mate.  A little weird, I know.

L is for Life: Here is my catchall group for all things in my world.  Whether it’s stories about my upcoming wedding, social outings with my friends, or vacation planning with my fiancé – you’ll find it here.

O is for Opinion:  I have an opinion.  Maybe too many.  I don’t judge, I just form opinions.  Everyone has their own opinions and I love to hear other people’s side as well.  We all hail from different walks of life, so our thoughts should differ from time to time, am I right?  You’ll find opinion posts on the site from time to time.

N is for Notes:  I thought the word “musings” was too played out.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t muse from time to time.  Instead, I’ll disguise my musings under the word Notes and trick you guys into reading my random ramblings.  Brilliant idea, if I do say so myself.

D is for Dollars: Easy.  You guys know I love me some money talk.  I live, breathe, and die savings, income, and debt topics.  Of course, my original blog was solely focused on personal finance, so a good portion of the talk on this blog will be personal finance as well.  Never fear PF readers, I’ll still talk dollars!

E is for Excel: An idle mind is never a good thing.  I’m constantly trying to improve myself.  No one has ever reached their full potential.  I’m always trying to reach mine (er, it’s still a ways off).  Whether it’s as small as figuring out a way to donate some time to my church or as big as passing the CPA exam, I’ll always work to excel at something.

Balanced: And among all of those little pools of life … I try to find balance.  Because balance is the key to everything.

There you have it!  I’m so excited about the new blog and can’t wait to talk about all the new topics!

Over the next few weeks, I’ll talk more about my manifestos on all the core B&B topics.

Stay tuned and thanks for reading!
